New Years Resolutions

Most people see the New Year as a chance to start fresh and improve their lives. Gyms become a little more crowded, social media sites seem to be a little less annoying and the amount of secondhand smoke I inhale diminishes substantially. However, a few months in, I'm able to get back to a peaceful workout while I delete people who post outlandish comments after reactivating their social media accounts. So, what's the secret to keeping those New Year's resolutions?

1. Don't give something up. I've had many failed attempts at giving something up for New Year's resolutions. Some of my attempts include giving up dessert, soda and wine. I drank wine within a week and I'm sure the others didn't last much longer. The bottom line is, depriving yourself of something doesn't make you a better person. To be honest, it'll probably make you more irritable and unpleasant if my experiences are at all similar to yours. Instead, use the start of a new year as a chance to volunteer more or pick up a hobby.

2. Do it for yourself. If you're choosing a New Year's resolution to impress someone else, it's never going to last. Do it because it improves your quality of life in some way; not because the cute boy across the hall might notice you. That's just an added bonus.

3. Dig a little deeper for your resolution. Sure, losing a few extra pounds and living healthy are great goals. However, if those have failed in the past, it may be time to dig a little deeper and get in touch with your emotions as your resolution. Am I saying you should call a therapist immediately or cry every time you watch a romantic comedy? No, that's unnecessary. But, keeping a journal or telling the people in your life that you love them more are both easy resolutions that are guaranteed to make this year a little better.

4. Be Reasonable. The most important thing is to be honest with yourself about how much you can handle.Be reasonable about your resolution or it'll be stressful and you'll feel guilty when you don't succeed.
